As winter draws to an end, upcoming warmer seasons are moving to the forefront of everybody's minds. For some people, this means shedding the winter weight and getting back in shape for spring and summer.

Checkout lanes filling their shelves with magazines promising celebrity secrets to getting fit and losing weight and the emergence, or re-emergence, of fad diets can lead to confusion for students about what is the best plan for them as they begin a new workout or diet plan.

Campus Recreation and Student Programming is available to help sort out some of this confusion and get Youngstown State University students on track to starting a new health plan or simply adjusting an old one.

"There's just so many factors that go into getting in shape, getting healthy and a healthy diet," said Chrystyna Zellers, a registered dietitian at Andrews Student Recreation and Wellness Center.

Mandi Campana, the Rec Center's coordinator for fitness and wellness programs, said the best way to ensure success in a workout plan is to "find time to do it" and "be ready to commit." Making realistic, achievable goals a part of the workout plan keeps students on track, she said.

A way for students to know what realistic goals are for them is to get a fitness assessment at the Rec Center. Campana said this is a good starting point because "once you have an assessment, you can find out where you are at [physically]." She said starting with a fitness assessment also allows students to re-evaluate themselves later on.

The Rec Center offers nutrition assessments through Zellers. She also offers individual nutrition counseling that looks to make small changes in what the student is already eating rather than presenting an entirely new menu.

She said some of the measurements she takes during the assessment are height, weight, body mass index and body fat percentage.

She said that measuring body fat gives a better idea of a person's body composition and can be re-evaluated later.
