Kayne said that better time management, a reasonable workload and realistic expectations would help college students alleviate stress and reduce their chances of becoming depressed.

Evers suggested dealing with stress by doing physical activity and breathing exercises and listening to calm music. He strongly advises people to choose their friends carefully.

"You have to have a positive support system of family and friends," Evers said. "Surround yourself with the right people, not just the most fun people."

"Depression is a serious illness that can kill," Lyden said.

Lyden explained that by receiving counseling, situations that contributed to or triggered her depression were addressed, and she came to better understand how she was handling her illness and what she could do to effectively treat it.

Many colleges around the country have counseling centers to help students deal with problems such as depression. YSU's Career and Counseling Services denied an interview request for this story.
