Junior Robby Richardson, a mathematics major, sees the need for more STEM majors.

"I think it's a good thing. Not a lot of students go into these fields," Richardson said.

Some liberal arts and social sciences majors feel that the increase in support of students in STEM fields is unfair.

Junior Ryan Brautigan, a political science major, said it is unfair, but understands that funding education is important.

"I think it helps everyone when you are trying to get more allocations of funds," Brautigan said.

Brautigan also said that supporting those who want to better themselves and get an education is something positive for the state.

The reason for the increased attention on science and math majors is the potential that lies ahead for the state with more science and math majors, Ritchey said.

"We start comparing ourselves to other states and we see a difference that other states are producing more science and engineer majors," Ritchey said. "People earn a living on their ability to think, and as a state, that makes us nervous."

Ritchey said access is always an issue, and finance is a part of that.

"It's an incentive to choose the major," said Ritchey.

Sophomore Rob Westfall, a science and math education major, said, "Well, it's probably not fair to the other kids because it should be an open playing field. But it is good because we need a lot of science and math people in the world."

The recommendations from the council echo "what we see at the national level," Ritchey said. The Ohio Board of Regents also developed initiatives and is in-sync with the council's recommendations, Ritchey said.

Embryonic stem cell research opponents should cease their attempts to malign embryonic stem cell advocates and scientists. Limbaugh?s attack on Fox is not an isolated incident, but the worst excess of a strategy to discredit supporters of embryonic stem cell research. (Continued…)
