Evan said she plans on majoring in English when she graduates and that the event helps her prepare.

"It really gets me out there and gets me started," Evan said.

Roxanne Johnson, a Chaney High School junior, said she also enjoyed interacting with other schools and looks forward to the event each year to reconnect with familiar faces.

Johnson said the featured books were better than in past years and that she seemed to learn more from the workshops this year because the instructors were easier to communicate with and had made their methods clearer.

Johnson added she was excited to see Woodson and had brought copies of her books for the author to sign.
